“I know exactly what I need to do. I’ve read the books, done the courses, worked with CBT therapists. I understand my patterns, I know better strategies, I can analyse my problems perfectly. So why do I keep doing the same things and feeling the same way?”

This question from my client Amin captures one of the most frustrating experiences in personal development: having all the insight in the world but still feeling completely stuck. It’s not because you’re lacking intelligence or willpower – you’re simply trying to solve a whole-system problem with a single-system approach.

Understanding the Thinking Brain vs. the Feeling Brain

Your brain has different systems for different functions. The thinking brain (prefrontal cortex) handles logic and planning. The feeling brain (limbic system) processes emotions and automatic responses.

Most approaches focus exclusively on the thinking brain whilst the feeling brain remains unchanged. You can understand your patterns perfectly whilst still being controlled by them.

As Einstein wisely said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” Real change requires working with both systems through The Happy Reset 3-Step Process.

There are also genetic variants like the FKBP5 gene, that affect how stress impacts the connection between the thinking and feeling parts of your brain, explaining why pure cognitive approaches might feel ineffective.

Reason 1: Your Body Holds the Patterns, Not Your Mind

What most people try: Use logic and willpower to override automatic responses and emotional patterns.

Why this doesn’t work: Your patterns are stored in your nervous system, muscles, and cellular memory. They’re not just thoughts you can change by thinking differently.

When you experience trauma or chronic stress, these experiences get encoded in your body. Your posture, breathing patterns, and automatic responses all carry information about your history.

How patterns live in your body:

  • Muscle tension that recreates familiar stress postures
  • Breathing patterns that maintain anxiety or depression
  • Nervous system responses that activate before you’re consciously aware
  • Cellular memories that trigger reactions to certain situations

Amin’s example: His shoulders would automatically rise towards his ears whenever someone asked him for something, even before he consciously registered the request.

What Your Body Actually Needs

Your body’s patterns were created through experience, not thought. They need to be updated through new experiences that help your nervous system learn different responses are safe.

The Happy Reset approach works with both your conscious understanding and your body’s unconscious patterns through gentle practices like movement, breathwork, or somatic therapies.

Reason 2: Your Nervous System Prioritises Safety Over Growth

What most people try: Force themselves to change behaviours even when their nervous system perceives these changes as threatening.

Why this doesn’t work: Your nervous system’s primary job is to keep you alive, not help you grow. If change feels unsafe, your nervous system will override your conscious intentions to maintain familiar patterns.

Your FKBP5 variants influence how sensitive your threat-detection system is and how easily your nervous system can adapt to new ways of being.

How safety blocks change:

  • People-pleasing feels safer than risking rejection
  • Staying small feels safer than risking failure
  • Familiar pain feels safer than unknown possibilities
  • Control feels safer than trusting the process

Amin’s safety dilemma: His people-pleasing had protected him from rejection in childhood. His nervous system still perceived saying no as dangerous because it had learned that disappointing others led to emotional abandonment.

Creating Safety for Change

Your nervous system needs gradual experiences of safety whilst experimenting with new behaviours. Change needs to happen slowly enough that your nervous system can adapt without triggering overwhelming threat responses.

Instead of forcing change, we create conditions where change feels safe. We help your nervous system learn that new ways of being can be both authentic and safe.

Reason 3: Your Environment Reinforces Old Patterns

What most people try: Change themselves whilst staying in exactly the same environments that created and reinforced their patterns.

Why this doesn’t work: Your environment constantly gives your nervous system information about what behaviours are expected and safe. If your environment hasn’t changed, it continues to activate the same patterns regardless of your conscious intentions.

Environmental pattern reinforcement:

  • Family systems that punish authenticity and reward compliance
  • Work environments that demand perfectionism and punish boundaries
  • Social groups that reinforce limiting beliefs
  • Physical spaces that trigger old emotional states

Amin’s environmental challenge: He was trying to develop boundaries whilst working in a family business where saying no was seen as disloyalty. Every day, his environment reinforced the people-pleasing patterns he was trying to change.

Supporting Real Change

What actually supports change:

  • Gradually modifying your environment to support new patterns
  • Finding relationships that welcome your authentic self
  • Creating physical environments that help your nervous system feel safe
  • Building supportive community around your growth

Amin started spending time with people outside the family system who appreciated his honesty and boundaries. This gave his nervous system evidence that being authentic could be safe.

The Integration Approach: Mind AND Body

Real change happens when you work with both your thinking brain and your feeling brain:

Cognitive work: Understanding patterns, developing strategies, gaining insight

Somatic work: Updating nervous system patterns, releasing stored tension, creating new body experiences

Environmental work: Modifying surroundings and relationships to support new patterns

Integration work: Bringing all three together so changes feel natural and sustainable

Amin combined psychological insights with TRE (tension release exercises), gradually modified his work environment, and built relationships that welcomed his authentic self. The changes began to feel natural rather than forced.

Your Patterns Made Sense

  • Before you judge yourself for being stuck, remember that your patterns developed for good reasons. They helped you survive and adapt to circumstances that required these exact responses.
  • Your people-pleasing, perfectionism, or withdrawal weren’t character flaws. They were intelligent adaptations to your circumstances.
  • The goal isn’t to eliminate these patterns entirely. It’s to give your nervous system more options so you can choose responses that serve your current life.

Your Whole System Deserves Support

You’re human, with a complex nervous system that processes change through multiple channels.

Your patterns aren’t evidence of failure. They’re evidence of your nervous system’s incredible ability to adapt. Now you get to help it adapt in directions that serve your current life.
