How Generational Trauma Shows Up In The Body

The inherited patterns behind anxiety, chronic stress & family relationships

Most people who find their way to this work have hit a ceiling the usual answers can’t reach. The drive that won’t switch off. The confidence that won’t show up when it matters. The body that won’t settle no matter how much you sleep, how well you eat, or what you’ve tried. This is where therapy and coaching often reach their limit – these patterns started long before you did. Held in the nervous system, passed down through families – and across cultures, continents and generations for those carrying multiracial or diaspora heritage – showing up in your decisions, your relationships and your body, often without you knowing.

The work moves through three stages: Find, Follow, Grow. We find and recognise the patterns we hold. We follow them and notice the wounds and symptoms, and where those patterns show up. And then we grow into a different relationship with what’s held, building awareness that becomes resilience and change.

Body

Tension Release

Your body holds the story, but it also holds the key to rewriting it

More

I spent years trying to think my way out of anxiety and tension until I discovered something that is innate in all of us – your body has its own wisdom. Through tension and trauma release and gentle somatic practices, your nervous system can let go of what it’s been carrying – no reliving required, no analysing necessary, just natural release and restoration.

Mind

Brainspotting

Breakthroughs happen in quiet spaces your brain already knows

More

This is a way for your brain to process difficult emotions through specific pathways that don’t always require words. What I bring to it is shaped by my own ancestral, indigenous-rooted lens on how the eyes and body process what they’re holding. The changes happen profoundly from within, like a gate opening you didn’t know was closed.

Nutrition

Nutrigenomics

What if you need different nutrients to everyone else?

More

Turns out, my multiracial heritage means my genetic profile doesn’t fit neatly into any single population’s research – and my genes were trying to tell me something important. Using nutrigenomics reporting, we discover how your body uniquely processes nutrients, hormones and handles stress, so you can finally eat and supplement in a way that supports you.

Learn More – Nutrigenomics

“When the mind remembers a challenge or trauma, the body will always react in some way no matter how small. That felt sense can be the beginning to a gate opening. It’s up to you how wide you leave it open and for how long” ~ Jo Lothian

Reset 1:1

Private Practice

Bespoke one-to-one work for private clients ready for sustained, deeper change – at your pace, in complete confidence, with a fully personalised pathway shaped around what your body, inherited patterns, root causes and goals are asking for. Workplace Reset

Executives & Teams

Executive coaching for senior leaders and founders, grounded in nervous-system regulation and inherited-pattern work, alongside team programmes that build embodied resilience. The patterns slowing your people down are deeper than they look – they live in the body and shape how your people lead under pressure.

Speaking & Media

Keynotes & Workshops

Conferences, festivals, podcasts and panels – bringing the knowledge of inherited patterns, nervous system regulation, and trauma-attuned leadership to audiences who want immersive experiences that change how they think and feel, with tangible tools and change that lasts long after the event.

Trauma-Informed Executive Coaching

For leaders & teams

Your people can’t think clearly when their nervous systems are stuck in survival mode. Meditation apps and resilience posters don’t change that, because the patterns aren’t conscious, and the conscious mind finds them hard to reach. I work with organisations in two ways through a trauma-attuned approach:

Executive Coaching – confidential one-to-one work for founders, C-suite and senior leaders carrying the weight of the organisation. The work reaches the inherited patterns, held stress and nervous system wiring behind the performance plateau.

Team Programmes – immersive workshops, half-day intensives, and multi-day Resets that help teams regulate the stress response, recover focus and build resilience for when pressure rises again.

Both are tailored around your culture, your people and what’s happening for them. What your people receive is depth, discretion and tools they’ll still be using months later – not another wellness initiative that fades with the fortnight.

Somatic Coaching & Private Practice

When talking therapy isn’t enough

Reset 1:1 works with the whole of you – your nervous system, emotional patterns, genetic blueprint and the patterns held within your history – in a fully bespoke pathway shaped around your way of living.

This is private practice for people who’ve done the surface work and know it isn’t enough. Whether you’re navigating complex health, a major life transition, or longstanding patterns that haven’t moved through other approaches, we begin with what your body and genetics are signalling now.

Sessions are confidential, held online or in-person at my Buckinghamshire practice, structured around your timeline. Designed to give you space to go deep, held in confidence, and with change that lasts long after our work together ends.

Sessions from £60. Bespoke programmes from £1,300.

Generational Patterns, Trauma & Nervous System Health

Topics covered in 1:1 sessions, workshops & keynotes

These are some of the areas I work with across 1:1 somatic therapy, executive coaching, workshops, keynotes and free resources. From anxiety, menopause and chronic stress to inherited trauma, grief and high-performance fatigue. Each topic represents years of practice combining body-based therapy, emotional processing and personalised nutrigenomics.

Generational Patterns

Release Inherited Trauma
& Create New Stories
More

If people carry pain that doesn't feel entirely their own - through family, culture or diaspora - get stuck in familiar patterns, or repeat behaviours seen across generations, there's often something deeper at play. This work explores how trauma moves through families and organisations, how it shows up in decisions and culture, and how to create new patterns.

Anxiety & Stress

Manage Pressure
& Build Resilience
More

Anxiety is repressed fear, anger and shame, and when stress becomes constant and anxiety runs high, engagement with others suffers and performance drops. This work addresses how your body responds to pressure, and provides practical regulation tools that will support you in all areas of life including relationships and high-stakes moments.

Peri & Menopause

Navigate Hormonal Changes
With Strength
More

Brain fog, mood swings, energy crashes and sleep disruption - when menopause makes everything feel harder, performance and confidence can take a hit. This work helps people understand what's happening in their system, work with changing biology, and maintain a clear sense of purpose and strength through the transition.

Performance & Blocks

Unlock Potential & Creativity
& Remove Blocks
More

When fear, perfectionism or past experiences hold people back, potential and creativity stay stalled despite capability. This work addresses what stops good decision-making and improved performance, by helping people break through invisible ceilings, and supporting them in rediscovering flow and sustainable excellence.

Grief & Loss

Navigate Loss
& Find New Rhythms
More

Whether navigating the loss of a person, relationship, role, identity, or facing organisational change, grief doesn't follow linear and perfect timelines. This work honours what's gone, while helping people find their way through transition, supporting them through complex emotions and building resilience during major change.

Loneliness & Low Mood

Reconnect & Lift
Yourself Up
More

If people are going through the motions without engaging, connection feels impossible, everything feels flat, and emotional capacity drains. This work helps rebuild connection with self and others, addresses patterns that maintain isolation, and restores the energy needed for meaningful participation.

Chronic Pain & Illness

Build Resilience
Through Health Challenges
More

Chronic pain or illness can disrupt daily functioning, and when conventional advice doesn't help, people often feel stuck and exhausted. This work helps rebuild trust with the body, addresses how your whole system responds to ongoing health challenges, and builds strength even when uncertainty persists.

Body Image & Food

Change Relationship
With Body & Food
More

When body image creates distress, and food becomes a source of anxiety rather than nourishment, shame and judgement takes hold. This work moves people beyond diets and willpower into genuine self-compassion and body trust, addressing the deeper patterns and physiological responses that maintain difficult cycles.

Early Parenthood

Support Bonding
& Regulation
More

Parenthood can be overwhelming, and when bonding feels uncertain, this major transition can feel isolating. This work offers practical support for stress regulation during challenges with children in home life. I help families and individuals find their rhythm together, through a nurturing, evidence-based approach.

Pay it forward. One paid, one gifted. Every person or organisation investing in their wellbeing funds a pro-bono session for someone in need – supporting ‘Brainspotting Help’ who work with those in war zones, disaster areas and crisis

The Impact Of This Work

Across one-to-one sessions, corporate workshops and keynote experiences, people notice genuine transformation - better sleep, clearer thinking, stronger resilience and sustainable change. The Happy Reset® method works because it addresses your whole system, not just symptoms. The feedback I receive from happy clients, reflects what happens when people finally feel supported in a way that makes sense for their unique bodies, mind and wiring.

Real People. Real Stories. Real Change

I’ve been lucky enough to do an individual with Jo as well as a group. I wasn’t sure if I’d get into it but very quickly I was shaking. Jo really puts you at ease and talks you through it. It’s sooo relaxing and I slept as a baby afterwards. I think the group sessions add a different dimension as you’re sharing with others (even though I didn’t know them before). I’d highly recommend Jo in trauma release, especially if you’re new to it. She’s so calming. Thankyou Jo.

Natasha Hill

Thank you for sharing these valuable techniques. I felt thoroughly supported throughout the process. I learnt a great deal and feel well equipped to use the practice. I look forward to future sessions.

Aicha Hallam

What an amazing experience! Thanks to Jo for her knowledge and outstanding teaching techniques both myself and my husband have trained our bodies to eliminate unwanted stress and tension through trauma release exercise. We will continue to follow this new ritual as we have really noticed the benefits after each session 😴😀

Jemma & Leroy Compino

Jo introduced me to trauma release therapy and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I wasn’t even sure where the trauma was in my history or even for sure that I had enough for it to work, but Jo explained this is perfectly normal and that it goes back far further in your ancestry. I had my first session and really enjoyed how I felt. It gave me a peaceful feeling, I felt truly relaxed. I slept well and I had a real feeling of wellbeing. Jo talks you through it all step by step with great patience and knowledge. I will be continuing with my sessions with Jo because I’m loving how it makes me feel.

Sam Humby

This practice is incredible and Jo holds the space for it to feel so safe and really let go of the body so it can do its thing. I love how it is not a talking therapy. The body has stored so much ‘stuff’ and this process which is deceivingly simple and actually very pleasant and relaxing allows the release. I found directly after taking part I felt relaxed and peaceful and slept so well, and then a couple of days after I had big emotional releases. But then I felt great again! Jo made me feel so safe and at ease, she has such a beautiful energy and is very knowledgeable about the body and this practice and I felt very confident in her ability to guide the process. I will continue under Jo’s guidance and highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Niki Clark

I had a session with Jo and was feeling a bit anxious and self-conscious about it. However, she quickly made me feel calm and at ease. During the session I was blown away how much trauma I had stored up and left the session feeling incredibly calm .. a feeling I definitely struggle with. I would highly recommend this to anyone and personally cannot wait to have another session!!

Susie Chong

Having looked in to methods of stress release, TRE really appealed to me. I came to Jo as I knew from previous years just how much she cared about health and well/being and I was not disappointed. Even after three sessions, I feel like a weight has been lifted and I feel like my old happy self again after more than three years of extreme emotional stress and trauma which lead to anxiety. Since starting with Jo, I have found myself laughing more than ever before, which is enough proof that with the right method, you can rebuild yourself after a tough time, and define you as the real you again.

Anna Horne

Jo is such a kind, calm and understanding person. I really struggle with anxiety which is exacerbated by years of trauma. My TRE sessions with Jo have been incredibly helpful with helping me release the stress and tension, as well as all the emotions I tend to hold on to. It’s very easy talking to Jo and I felt I was able to be vulnerable with her without being self-conscious, especially with how vulnerable you feel when you shake. I also do nutritional health sessions with Jo. These sessions have helped me build a better relationship with food and has also helped me feel more confident, and strong in my body. Thank you, Jo for all you’ve helped me with!
