Recognising the Subtle Symptoms of Unresolved Trauma

Trauma isn’t always obvious. It doesn’t always look like the flashbacks and nightmares we see in movies. For many people, the impact of trauma is more insidious, weaving itself into the fabric of their daily lives in ways they may not even recognise. Unresolved trauma can manifest as chronic fatigue, unexplained physical symptoms, emotional reactivity, and patterns of unhealthy relationships. It can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves and others, struggling to find joy and meaning in life. If you’ve ever had a nagging sense that something’s not quite right, even if you can’t put your finger on it, unresolved trauma might be at the root.

How Trauma Gets Stored in the Physical Body

One of the most overlooked signs of unresolved trauma is physical discomfort. Trauma isn’t just a psychological experience – it’s deeply embodied. When we go through something traumatic, our body’s natural stress response gets activated. If we don’t have the chance to complete that response and return to a state of safety, that stress can get stored in the body. This can show up as chronic muscle tension, headaches, digestive problems, and even autoimmune conditions. If you’ve been dealing with persistent physical symptoms that doctors can’t quite explain, it’s worth considering whether unresolved trauma might be a factor.

The Unexpected Triggers of Trauma – Emotional Flashbacks

Another common but often misunderstood sign of trauma is emotional flashbacks. Unlike visual flashbacks, which involve vivid memories of the traumatic event, emotional flashbacks are more subtle. They occur when something in the present triggers the same emotional state we experienced during the original trauma. Suddenly, we’re flooded with feelings of fear, shame, or helplessness that seem out of proportion to the current situation. We might lash out at loved ones, retreat into isolation, or engage in self-destructive behaviours. These intense emotional reactions can be baffling and distressing, but they make sense when we understand them as echoes of the past.

Hypervigilance vs. Dissociation Trauma Response

Trauma can also manifest as hypervigilance – a constant state of high alert, always scanning for potential threats. This might look like startling easily, struggling to relax or sleep, or feeling on edge in social situations. On the flip side, trauma can also lead to dissociation – a sense of disconnection from the body, emotions, or surroundings. Dissociation can feel like spacing out, going through the motions on autopilot, or having a foggy, dreamlike sense of unreality. Both hypervigilance and dissociation are attempts by the nervous system to cope with overwhelming stress, but they can leave us feeling exhausted, disconnected, and unable to be fully present in our lives.

How Unresolved Trauma Impacts Relationships and Intimacy

Trauma doesn’t just affect us individually – it ripples out into our relationships. Unresolved trauma can make it difficult to trust others, communicate effectively, and establish healthy boundaries. We might find ourselves constantly drawn to unhealthy or abusive dynamics, repeating the patterns of the past. Or we might struggle with intimacy and vulnerability, pushing others away out of fear of getting hurt. Trauma can also fuel conflicts and misunderstandings, as our own unhealed wounds get triggered by the words or actions of others. If you’ve noticed a pattern of relationship struggles or a sense of isolation and disconnection from others, unresolved trauma might be playing a role.
