“On paper, my life is perfect. Good job, loving family, nice home, financial security. So why do I feel like something’s fundamentally wrong?”

This message from my client Sophie captures one of the most isolating experiences: when your external life looks successful but your internal world feels chaotic. If you’ve ever wondered why you feel ‘off’ despite having everything you thought you wanted, your body might be sending you crucial signals that your mind hasn’t caught up to yet.

When Your Body Knows What Your Mind Hasn’t Caught Up To

Your body processes information about your environment, relationships, and life circumstances much faster than your conscious mind. It detects subtleties, patterns, and misalignments that your thinking brain hasn’t yet organised into clear thoughts.

This is why you might feel ‘off’ even when you can’t logically explain why. Your body has detected something that needs attention, but the information hasn’t reached your conscious awareness yet.

These unexplained feelings aren’t signs of mental instability or ingratitude. They’re early warning signals from a highly sophisticated internal guidance system.

Your genetics play a role here too. Your MAOA variants affect how your brain processes neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. If you have certain variants, you might be more sensitive to environmental and emotional misalignments, picking up on subtle discord that others miss entirely.

As Maya Angelou once said, “When people show you who they are, believe them the first time.” Your body applies this wisdom to every aspect of your life experience.

Signal 1: Your Body Feels Heavy Even When You’re Not Physically Tired

What it looks like: You feel like you’re moving through treacle. Simple tasks require enormous effort. Your body feels weighted down even after rest. You might describe it as feeling ‘blah’ about things that used to interest you.

What your body is detecting: Misalignment between your authentic self and how you’re living your life. This heaviness often appears when you’re living according to others’ expectations rather than your own values and desires.

The genetic piece: Your MAOA variants affect how efficiently your brain processes serotonin, which influences mood and motivation. If you have slower MAOA processing, misalignment might manifest as physical heaviness more quickly than for others.

Sophie realised her heaviness started when she took a promotion that looked perfect on paper but required her to manage people constantly. As a natural introvert who recharged through solitude, the daily social demands were depleting her, even though she was successful.

What your body needs: Time to reconnect with what genuinely energises you versus what you think should energise you. Notice which activities make you feel lighter and which make you feel heavier.

Signal 2: Your Nervous System Feels Restless Despite Having “Everything You Want”

What it looks like: You feel agitated or restless without obvious cause. You might find yourself constantly fidgeting, changing positions, or feeling like you need to escape even when you’re in places you should enjoy. You might feel an urge to make big changes but can’t identify what needs changing.

What your body is detecting: Growth edges or life transitions that your conscious mind hasn’t recognised yet. Your body often knows you’re ready for change before your mind does.

The MAOA connection: People with certain MAOA variants might experience this restlessness more intensely because their nervous systems are more sensitive to dopamine levels. When your life lacks sufficient novelty or challenge, your body creates restlessness to motivate change.

Sophie noticed the feeling was strongest during weekends and holidays when her structured work routine disappeared. Her body was telling her that whilst her work provided structure, it wasn’t providing the kind of creative challenge her system craved.

What your body needs: Gentle experiments with new experiences, even small ones. This might mean trying a different route to work, learning something new, or having conversations about topics you’re curious about.

Signal 3: Your Gut Reacts to People and Situations That ‘Should’ Be Fine

What it looks like: Your stomach tightens around certain people, even if they’re objectively nice. You feel drained after interactions that seem pleasant on the surface. You have physical reactions to environments or situations that look perfectly safe.

What your body is detecting: Subtle energy dynamics, authenticity levels, or safety factors that aren’t obvious to conscious observation. Your gut literally has more neurons than a cat’s brain and processes complex social and environmental information.

The genetic factor: Your MAOA variants influence how your nervous system processes social information and stress. Some variants make you more attuned to subtle social cues and energy dynamics.

Sophie noticed her stomach always felt tight after coffee dates with a particular friend who was lovely but constantly complained. Her body was detecting the energy drain before her mind recognised the pattern.

What your body needs: Permission to trust these gut reactions as valuable information rather than dismissing them as irrational. Start paying attention to which people and environments help your nervous system settle.

How MAOA Variants Affect Your Internal Guidance System

Your MAOA gene affects how your brain breaks down neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. This influences your emotional sensitivity, environmental sensitivity, social sensitivity, and change sensitivity.

If you have slower MAOA variants: You might pick up on subtle misalignments more quickly, environmental and social factors might affect you more intensely, and your body’s signals might be stronger.

If you have faster MAOA variants: You might be more resilient to environmental stress, need more stimulation or challenge to feel engaged, and your body’s signals might be more subtle.

Neither is better or worse. They’re just different information processing styles that require different approaches to life design.

Creating Life Alignment Based on Your Body’s Feedback

Instead of dismissing your body’s signals as problems to overcome, what if you used them as guidance for creating a life that actually fits your nervous system?

Sophie discovered that her ‘perfect’ life was perfect for someone else’s values and preferences, but not for hers. She’d built a life based on external measures of success rather than internal measures of alignment.

Making changes didn’t require dramatic upheaval. She negotiated more autonomous work projects, spent less time with energy-draining social commitments, and created more space for creative pursuits that genuinely energised her.

Her life looked very similar from the outside, but felt completely different from the inside.

    Trusting Your Body’s Wisdom

We live in a culture that prioritises external achievement over internal alignment. We’re taught to override our body’s signals in service of productivity, social expectations, and external measures of success.

But your body’s wisdom is essential information about what supports your wellbeing and what undermines it.

When life looks fine but feels off, your body is being informative. Those unexplained feelings of heaviness, restlessness, or gut reactions aren’t problems to solve – they’re guidance to follow.

Your nervous system is constantly working to help you create a life that truly fits who you are. The question is: are you listening?
